Jessica Simpson is coming to a TV near you — again. The performer and fashion mogul has just confirmed that she will soon star in a sitcom for NBC based on her life.
“I am so excited to work with Ben [Silverman] and NBC again, this time on a scripted comedy,” she said about the project, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “I often find myself thinking that no one could ever make up the things that actually happen in my life — so between the real-life elements and a great team of writers, I think we’ll have people laughing!”
Robin and Nick Bakay pitched the series to NBC, which has yet to film its pilot episode. Nick worked on the Kevin James movies “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” and “Zookeeper,” as well as the TV show “Til Death,” and will pen the pilot’s script. Jessica’s dad, Joe Simpson, will serve as a producer, along with Electus’ Silverman and Jimmy Fox.
“We are thrilled to team up with the multitalented Jessica Simpson to bring this new sitcom to life on NBC, as she is truly a modern-day Lucy with incredible comedic chops,” Silverman said. “From running a fashion empire to wrangling her public image as a new mom, we see Jessica’s character approach a variety of ‘everyday’ circumstances that will get audiences laughing out loud.”
Simpson has a long history on the small screen. She starred with her ex-husband, Nick Lachey, on the MTV reality series “Newlyweds.” She’s also tackled reality TV on VH1 on her short-lived docuseries “The Price of Beauty.” She most recently mentored contestants on NBC on the fashion competition show “Fashion Star,” which is also produced by Electus. Her acting credits include big-screen comedies like “Employee of the Month” and “The Dukes of Hazzard.”
Simpson previously filmed a pilot, dubbed “Jessica,” for ABC back in 2004, but the show never made it to the air. Currently, Simpson is a spokesperson for Weight Watchers. She’s also expecting her second child with fiancé Eric Johnson.
For those keeping count, the last time Simpson released an album was in 2010, when she dropped Happy Christmas. That same year she recorded the track “Who We Are” with Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan as the theme song for her VH1 show. Here’s hoping they can re-create that magic for her latest project!
