There’s no question Psy has had a whirlwind year. He’s racked up more than 848 million views on YouTube, united with MC Hammer at the American Music Awards and gotten his “Gangnam Style” on with countless celebs, including Britney Spears and Madonna.
And while many of us are still scratching our heads regarding his overnight success, fellow Korean pop stars Wonder Girls say his accomplishments come as “no surprise.”
“Psy was a huge star back in Korea,” Wonder Girls member Yubin told MTV News. “We grew up listening to him, so we’re very glad he’s becoming huge here and all over the world.”
But Psy isn’t the only Korean artist making waves in the United States: The Wonder Girls’ single “Like Money” hit #22 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 earlier this year, while Girls Generation charted on the Billboard 200 with their EP Twinkle.
“As a Korean singer, we’re really proud and we’re really delighted about this phenomenon,” Sun from the Wonder Girls said of K-pop’s success in the U.S. “I think people are really interested in new styles and new things.”
Wonder Girls were nominated in the Favourite Asian Act category at the 2012 Kids’ Choice Awards. The group released “Like Money,” featuring Akon, earlier this summer, and their debut English album is due to drop sometime next year.
