M.I.A. is all about positivity these days … and apparently, it’s too much for Interscope to handle.
In a new interview, the outspoken singer says her label has pushed back the release date of her upcoming album Matangi, because it’s “too positive,” and has instructed her to “darken it up a bit.”
“I thought I’d finished it. I finished it and then I handed the record in, like, a couple of months ago,” M.I.A. said. “At the moment, I’ve been told it’s too positive. So we’re having a bit of an issue at the label … It’s like ‘We just built you up as the public enemy number 1, and now you’re coming out with all this positive stuff.”
Matangi — a reference to M.I.A.’s birth name, Mathangi, and a Hindu goddess of wisdom — was reportedly set to be released late last year, but now will hit stores in April … though, even that date is subject to change, because M.I.A. said she’s still trying to figure out what Interscope wants from her.
“I’m taking my time to decide what they mean. It’s an interesting one for me,” she said.
Of course, in keeping with her new outlook (and musical direction), M.I.A. is willing to indulge the requests of her label — “That’s the point of being positive,” she said — but it’s unclear if Matangi, the follow-up to her 2010 MAYA album, will still be released in April … MTV News‘ emails to Interscope seeking comment on the matter were not responded to by press time.
