It looks like Justin Timberlake’s six-year hiatus from music is officially over.
On Thursday (January 10), after teasing a return to, well, something JT unveiled a video that shows him confidently striding into the recording booth, putting on a pair of headphones, and declaring “I’m Ready.”
“Someone asked me the other day ‘So, are you just done with music?’ It means more to me than anybody else in the world,” Timberlake says in a voiceover in the video. “Look, I’ve only done two albums in ten years; that’s the way I really look at it … I’m the one who sits and is obsessive about it before you even get to hear it.
“As close as I get to it, I don’t know that I could physically torture myself that much year-in and year-out and expect it to fulfill me the way that it does and the way that it is right now,” he continues. “I don’t want to put anything out that I feel like is something I don’t love, you just don’t get that every day. You have to wait for it.”
And wait we apparently will, because at the end of the video, a countdown clock — set to expire at midnight on Sunday (January 13) — is displayed on his site. There’s no word what it’s ticking towards, though The Hollywood Reporter says he’s gearing up for a new album, and several reports have Timberlake preparing to release a song that will feature none other than Jay-Z.
Since releasing his critically acclaimed FutureSex/LoveSounds album in 2006, Timberlake has done just about everything but music, branching out into movies (“The Social Network,” “Bad Teacher,” “Trouble with the Curve”), TV, fashion, restaurants home décor and, of course, the re-launch of MySpace. Of course, throughout, he’s continually answered questions about when he’d make new music: In 2011, he told British media that his plan was “to do another record.”
