It was the good news/bad news at Schoolboy Records HQ on Wednesday night during the “Grammy Nominations Concert Live!!” Because, while Carly Rae Jepsen snagged nominations for Song of the year and Best Pop Solo Performance for her smash “Call Me Maybe,” her mentor, Justin Bieber was completely frozen out. (More on label boss, Scooter Braun’s, reaction in a separate story.)
Otherwise, though, it was a night of celebration for the nominees, as everyone from 2 Chainz to Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, Ed Sheeran, Kelly Clarkson, Frank Ocean and Fun. lost their minds about their nominations.
In addition to performing, the men in Fun. had plenty to celebrate thanks to their leading six nominations, including in the Big Four categories: Record and Song of the Year (“We Are Young”), Album of the Year and Best New Artist. “Unreal night. Thank you for listening,” they tweeted, with keyboardist Andrew Dost adding, “Amazing night. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”
Odd Future crooner Frank Ocean was tied with Fun. for six nods (as were Mumford & Sons, Kanye West and Jay-Z), and he, for once, struggled to find words. The soft-spoken singer tweeted an image of the word, “Wow,” followed by “wtf” and finally a confused face emoticon.
Awards show darling (and the night’s co-host) Taylor Swift was equally jazzed, picking up nominations for Record of the Year (“We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”), as well as two for her “Hunger Games” collabo with the Civil Wars (“Safe & Sound”). “Honoured to also be nominated for 2 Grammys with @thecivilwars for ‘Safe and Sound’ on @thehungergames soundtrack. Unreal!” she tweeted, just after posting before and after Instagram pics of the Record of the Year envelope bearing her name.
Best New Artist nominees the Alabama Shakes were feeling it, tweeting “What a night! We love you all!”, while fellow Best New nominee Ed Sheeran just couldn’t put it into words. “I’ve been nominated for a Grammy,. I’m so happy x,” he wrote. He followed that with, “A team. A song I wrote with no home, no money, anything, nominated for Best Record at the Grammys. A dream come true. Ecstatic. Xxx… I can’t describe how happy I am… Ahhhhhh!!!!!
Maroon 5’s Adam Levine kept it classy about his band’s two bids with, “Two Grammy noms! Holy balls!” and rapper 2 Chainz just couldn’t contain himself.
“I jus wanna use this opportunity to thank GOD for everything that has taken place in my life good and bad,” he tweeted. “1st album 1st grammy nomination.” Chainz got two bids for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for his unforgettable verse on Kanye West’s “Mercy,” as well as one for Best Rap Album for his disc Based on a T.R.U. Story.
