In between the usual appearances from SpongeBob SquarePants and Spiderman, the 86th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade treated street spectators and home cookers alike to performances from Carly Rae Jepsen, Flo Rida and the Wanted on the streets of midtown New York City.
Hosted by NBC’s “Today” show anchors Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie and Al Roker, the three-hour event kicked off with a red-ribbon cutting and was followed by a slew of pre-parade dances and interviews. But once it was time for some radio-friendly tunes, the first show-stopping performance came courtesy of Carly Rae Jepsen, who rode on a fall harvest float to sing her catchy number, “This Kiss.” Bundled up in her coat and scarf, the just-turned 27-year-old pop star was all smiles as she bobbed side to side atop a wooden staircase.
Next up, all eyes were on Jimmy Fallon and the Roots as the collaborative acts took to screens for a rendition of Queen’s “We Will Rock You.” It was a feast for eyes as the performers were joined by holiday cheerleaders, who surrounded their rock and roll float for a synchronized routine. Soon after, Karmin kept the momentum going with their pop/rap hit “Brokenhearted” as Amy took charge of the number on a Homewood Suites float with her trusty counterpart playing the piano from behind.
While the Wanted had the young girls on their float grinning from ear-to-ear with their single, “I Found You,” had a few friendly turtles in good spirits with their high-energy tune “Everybody Talks.” Trading in zombies for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, lead singer Tyler Glenn belted out the rock song while the camera panned to parade-goers dancing along.
On what was reportedly a 30-foot float, Flo Rida donned some shades and a fedora as he performed his dance hit “I Cry” in front of an inflatable apple and Empire State Building structure.
Toward the end of the spectacle, YouTube sensations Megan and Liz showed up on a float filled with life-size bears to sing their tune “Bad For Me.” Just as they told MTV News, the sisterly duo showed off a new look without guitars and surrounded by float riders. Cody Simpson showed up after and repped for the Build-a-Bear brand as he and two accompanying dancers performed “Wish U Were Here” on the bear-loving float.
Broadway also invaded the parade with cast numbers from “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” “Annie,” “Bring It On: The Musical,” and “Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella,” who all performed on the green carpet in front of Macy’s.
Thursday’s parade wasn’t just a musical affair as the annual event also featured a star-studded line-up, including Miss USA 2012 Olivia Culpo, Whoopi Goldberg and U.S. Olympic Gold Medalists Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman, Kyla Ross and Jordyn Wiebe. And yet, it was the last appearance of the day that really took things to a new level when jolly ol’ Santa Clause rode through the Macy’s Thanksgiving affair.
