Despite the presence of Taylor Swift, Ke$ha, Justin Bieber (and his clique) and just about every artist on the planet, ratings for Sunday’s 40th American Music Awards were down… way down.
According to data provided by Nielsen, the AMAs delivered a 3.4 rating, down nearly a full point from last year’s show and “the lowest-rated telecast for the AMAs ever.” Guess not even dueling sets of Hammer pants could save them.
Of course, it bears mention that the show did face some rather stiff competition in the ratings, including NBC’s Steelers/Ravens “Sunday Night Football” tilt and even more NFL overruns on both CBS and FOX. The AMAs did manage to grab an 8 percent share of the 18-49 demo, though that number also trailed all the NFL telecasts by a large margin. A spokesperson for the show did not respond to MTV News‘ request for comment by press time.
It’s not as if the show didn’t deliver its fair share of memorable moments… Carly Rae Jepsen outraged Directioners everywhere by snagging New Artist of the Year over 1D, Bieber and Nicki Minaj had pulses pounding with their onstage interactions, Swift went into overdrive with an over-the-top performance of “I Knew You Were Trouble,” Christina Aguilera reminded us all that she can still bring it with the best of them, and South Korean sensation Psy closed the show out by trading dance moves with Hammer.
