Shortly after 11 p.m. ET on Tuesday, President Obama celebrated his victory and second term as president with one simple tweet. It featured the POTUS and his wife, First Lady Michelle Obama, hugging, with the caption "Four More Years."
That simple victory celebration quickly became the most retweeted tweet in Twitter history. As of press time on Wednesday (November 7) morning, hours after Obama declared victory over Mitt Romney, the tweet had 643,135retweets and had been favorited 217,888times. The same photo on Facebook is the most-liked in the site’s history, according to the BBC, with more than 3.1 million likes.
According to NBC News, the photo’s massive social swag overtakes the record previously held by Justin Bieber. The pop star had previously held the record after he tweeted about the passing of his fan, Avalanna Routh, who died earlier this fall.
Prior to the record-making tweet from Obama, he thanked his supporters for re-electing him. "This happened because of you. Thank you. We’re all in this together. That’s how we campaigned, and that’s who we are. Thank you. –bo," he wrote.
Shortly after the president made history with his tweet, Bieber didn’t seem to mind being knocked to #2, writing, "alot of emotions right now. congrats President Obama…Im Canadian. Im good. #FreeHealthcare "
Obama was in Chicago when it was announced he had won the 2012 election, making him the 44th president. He spoke to his supporters and all Americans from Chicago’s McCormick Place, thanking them, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife for helping bring him to victory for a second time. He said, "I have always believed that hope is that stubborn thing that exists when something better awaits us. For the United States of America, the best is yet to come."
