It’s been more than a decade since Kelly Clarkson was crowned the first-ever winner of “American Idol,” and a lot has changed for the singing competition since then.
There have been name changes (“American Idol” was actually called “American Idol: The Search for a Superstar” its first season), hosting changes (remember Dunkleman?) and, of course, lots of judge changes.
This upcoming season is no different, with three new judges taking their places on the panel alongside veteran Randy Jackson: Keith Urban, Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj.
Things have already begun heating up between the two divas, who initially dispelled rumours that they were at odds. But when a video leaked of Nicki and Mariah in a heated spat shortly thereafter, speculations were confirmed that things weren’t all that friendly on the “Idol” set.
“I told them I’m not f—ing putting up with her f—ing highness over there,” Minaj says in a clip, which was obtained by TMZ. “Ohhhhh, why, why, why?” Carey responds. “Figure it out!” Minaj yells repeatedly during auditions in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Since then, fans have been anxiously waiting for the show’s January premiere to find out how the feud between the two plays out. Whether good or bad, everyone will be tuning in — including season-one champ Clarkson.
“I heard they had some argument,” Clarkson recently told MTV News. “Well, that will all make for fun TV, let’s be honest!”
In the 10 years since Clarkson won “Idol,” she has returned several times to perform. And even though it’s exciting for her to go back to where it all began, the 30-year-old singer — who is gearing up to release her Greatest Hits – Chapter 1 album November 19 — admits that sometimes it makes her feel a bit old.
“It is really weird, though, because I’ll be on a show and then people will be like, ‘I voted for you when I was like 8!’ ” Clarkson said. “And I’m like, ‘Oh, when you were 8? I’m so old!’ ”
