With his Take Care hit “The Motto,” Drake made YOLO (you only live once) possibly the most pervasive tagline of the past 12 months. And now that the acronym is popping up on merchandise everywhere, Drake thinks he’s entitled to a paycheck.
On Christmas Eve, the Toronto rapper posted a couple of photographs, one taken at a Walgreens store and another at Macy’s, both showing merchandise stamped with “YOLO.”
Under the image from Walgreens, which shows a stack of colorful caps being sold for six bucks a pop, Drake wrote, “Walgreens … you gotta either chill or cut the cheque.” And under the Macy’s photo, which shows a T-shirt featuring Peanuts characters Charlie Brown and Snoopy imprinted with “YOLO is my motto,” he added, “Macy’s … same goes for you.”
No word on whether or not Drake actually intends to pursue legal action here. According to Gawker, he might have a tough time trying to copyright YOLO since there have already been more than 100 U.S. trademark applications to use the acronym on an array of different products.
Even if he never gets a check for popularizing YOLO, Drake still has plenty of income coming his way. Earlier this month the YMCMB rapper signed his OVO imprint to Warner Bros. Records for distribution. Drake hasn’t announced the addition of any new talent to his label just yet, but that’s sure to come in 2013. In the meantime, he remains signed as a solo artist to Young Money/Cash Money Records.
