From the outside looking in, “The is 40” has a lot of things going for it in that it’s a sort-of sequel to “Knocked Up,” revolves around that film’s scene-stealers Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) and is loosely based on the real family life of director Judd Apatow his wife/actress Leslie Mann and their daughters, who also act in the film.
As indicated by the film’s title, one of the themes of the movie is aging gracefully after reaching the age of 40. When MTV News caught up with stars Rudd and Mann recently, we had a lot of questions to ask: Is reaching your fourth decade of life as scary as it once seemed? Were certain scenes in the movie inspired by actual life experiences? And what do you think of co-star Megan Fox’s boobs?
Both Mann and Rudd admitted that reaching the big 4-0 always seemed like an “old people” age, but were happy to showcase all sides – good, bad and ugly – for the sake of making a unique comedy. Rudd explained that the reality of the movie was the appeal in returning to “Pete.”
“If we’re going to try and make this movie and go to places that you haven’t really seen before that are completely honest, which was always the appeal of it to me,” he said. “Then we started doing it and we went to some really dark places and you’re thinking, ‘There’s no way he made them up.’ ”
However, the film’s completely made-up moment occurs during an intimate scene with Mann and bombshell actress Fox, in which she has to feel her chest. What did Mann think about working with Fox in those up-close-and-personal circumstances?
“I don’t think anyone was nervous. I just wanted to get it over with as quickly as possible because I felt very protective of her,” Mann admitted. “There were a lot of people around, a lot of boys around – probably dirty boys with dirty thoughts.”
