Now that “Jersey Shore” has come to an end after six seasons, many fans are looking for a new hit series to fill that Thursday (a.k.a. “Jerzday”) time slot. Well, lucky for those viewers, MTV’s brand-new series “Buckwild” will be filling that spot.
The new series, which debuts tonight (January 3) at 10:00pm et/pt, follows the lives of nine West Virginia twenty-somethings as the engage in fights, four-wheeling and dump-trunk pool parties.
Even though we’re trading “GTL” for “mudding,” “Buckwild” is similar to “Jersey Shore” in its jaw-dropping moments, including catfights with a neighbour and rolling down hills in truck tires. And that’s not the only thing the two shows have in common: “Buckwild” has also created some political controversy. Last month, West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin demanded that MTV cancel the series, saying the show is a “travesty” and that it “plays to ugly, inaccurate stereotypes about the people of West Virginia.”
MTV News recently sat down with two of the stars of “Buckwild,” Shae and Shain, who believe Senator Manchin was out of line in his comments.
“All them old people in West Virginia cannot go back and say that they did not do all that stupid stuff, because if they did, they’re lying,” Shain, a.k.a “Gandee Candy,” said. “I mean, they all had trucks, and they’s all being goofy, making our own stunts … just ours was caught on film.”
Shae, who is known as the Southern belle of the show, added, “I’m not representing anyone but myself. Like even my best friends on the show, if they do something to embarrass themselves, I don’t feel like they represent me. … I definitely can’t represent the entire state of West Virginia. That’s just stereotypical and just… it doesn’t make sense.”
Back in 2011, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who felt “Jersey Shore” portrayed his state in a negative light, pulled $420,000 in tax credits away from the show, even though local officials of Seaside Heights claimed there was a boost in economic activity. Seems like we will have to tune in to see how “Buckwild” impacts the town of Sissonville, West Virginia.
Following tonight’s premiere, MTV will air back-to-back half-hour episodes of the series each Thursday at 10:00pm et/pt.
